Saturated your taste buds trying the same Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Korean cuisines in Delhi? How about trying out the flavours of Malaysia now?! Yep, Delhi now has its very own authentic Malaysian restaurant, serving the finest Southern Asia platters. Set amidst the re-launched Ansal Plaza, the restaurant has been done with beautiful Malaysian style decors and artefacts. So while you dine overlooking the space, the vibrant decor scheme keeps the ambience happy and entertaining for everyone alike.
Jom Jom Malay means ‘come on let’s (try) this Malay’, which as per me is a very intriguingly articulated name for a one of its kind dining experience!
Speaking about the food, the menu is exhaustive with detailed Malaysian dishes that have been well researched on. The ingredients being put to use are sourced from the best resources and the preparation is done from scratch to preserve the authenticity of flavours. So no imported canned pastes and other shallow ingredients at all, which definitely reflects on the finished product as what they serve is absolutely fresh in terms of quality.
Satay lovers can rejoice over a generous serving of Chicken, Mutton and Fish satay that is garnished with grounded peanut and is served with Malay sauce and curry. The satays are grilled to perfection, preserving the juices of the meat while offering a crunchy outer layer for added texture. I absolutely loved having the Chicken satay with the peanut paste. Definitely a great way to start your Malaysian journey at Jom Jom Malay.
One definite dish that everyone looks forward to trying from the menu is the ‘Murtabak’. They cater to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian style of this stuffed pancake dish which comes with the Malay Curry for added juicy flavours. It’s quite a filling dish in itself, so you can share it as a snack with your friends or simply devour the flavours as a main course itself too!
For main course, Nasi Goreng is a must try meal! It’s basically fried rice served with a salad and topped with a sunny sided egg and other meats. It is very different from the Chinese fried rice that we are used to having. The main ingredient to prepare the dish is ‘Ikan Asin’ which is salted dried fish, offering the oriental flavours of the region.
If you love coconut based curries, then do give Lamb Redang a try. This curry dish can be very much relatable to a curry preparation from Southern parts of India. And what’s more relatable? The Roti Canai which is served with the curry, that’s much similar to the Porotta Kurma one can have in parts of South India.
Noodle lovers should give Hokkien Mee Goreng a try. The rice noodles are tossed with sprouts, green onions, chives, peppers and meats (optional), topped with a generous sprinkle of roasted sesame seeds. Quite colourful and flavourful as compared to the other noodle preparations we find in oriental dining, this dish was light, flavourful with balanced blend of sweetness and spice.
In terms of dessert, I will highly recommend the Coconut cake that’s soft with balanced flavours and apt amount of sweetness. I have also heard from my fellow food lovers that their Banoffee Pie too is a must try as well (next time, for sure).
Their are so many individual flavours and signature servings to introduce your taste buds at Jom Jom Malay, that just one visit won’t serve justice to all the efforts being put by the staff there. Not just presenting the dishes out, but the staff is humble enough to educate you about each dish, the preparation basics and how to savour it in the most authentic Malaysian style.
Although, Jom Jom Malay doesn’t serve alcohol as of now, their list of mocktails do cover up for the liquor need with some refreshing summer drinks freshly blended upon order. I absolutely enjoyed their watermelon concussion and me and my friends re-ordered cold coffee servings to conclude our satiation trying out the powerful flavours upon our visit there.
